S/S 22 denim collections: key styles and materials

Première Vision’s Denim Digital Week has just come to a close – a perfect moment to take stock of the key materials and shapes to build your denim collections for S/S 22, drawing on a rich selection of denims from some 60 exhibitors.

This season, exhibitors’ collections zeroed in on three main creative directions.

The season’s styles and materials reflect a search for comfort and well-being and are infused with a soothing simplicity.

Fueled by new hybrid codes and genres, denimwear is updated by a new focus on perfection and refinement. Eco-responsibility runs throughout this sector, impacting the choice of materials and promoting natural materials with a rustic feel.

OPTIMIZED COMFORT

Styles inspired by homewear give this universe a new spin, without ceding any comfort or elegance, and while making use of denim-specific materials. Imparting suppleness is paramount.

Cotton-elastane blends, increasingly in recycled versions, are now available in lighter weights for clothing that can be worn indoors and out.  A highly fluid, men’s pajama spirit is elaborated in silky and polynosic blends with elasticated, shortened waists ideal for men’s shirts.

The entire look is monochrome, in very light blue tones or quite soft dip dyes. In terms of jackets and coats, bathrobe styles are favored, for a kimono look that is more or less long, belted, airy and sometimes embellished, evoking ancestral Japanese techniques.

The season’s denims acquire a matchless softness and suppleness, a feel derived from specific washes. Worn directly against the skin, these fabrics are ideal for fluid shirts embellished with ruffle details and elegant pleats. On loose, pared-down dresses, there’s a fullness to some stylistic details, especially in puffy balloon or mutton-leg sleeves.

Denimwear mixes with streetwear for new casual styles, including sweat pants with narrowed ankles and drop crotches, and slightly oversized, zipped hoodies.

In these instances, denim weights are heavier yet remain supplen thanks to cotton and recycled polyester-elastane blends with a round, malleable hand.

REFINED PRECISION

A second direction focuses on precision work. These products deliver a masterful mix of innovation, performance and sophistication.

The results are clean, deliberately raw, structured, with more rigid handles redefining the codes of citywear. Styles vaunt a certain authenticity.  Based on classic cuts, products are updated thanks to new performance features – climatic to retain their freshness, antibacterial –  and functional details.

Cuts are precise and deliberately geometric: box jackets with hold, jeans with wide and cropped or, on the contrary, quite elongated legs, and a high waist with just a simple emphasis through the use of patch pockets and contrasting seams.

Occasionally, denims are treated to a slight shine: mercerized cottons or suppler Lyocell versions for chic denim suits with long, lightweight skirts or precision-cut tailored jackets. Menswear shirts grow relaxed, while maintaining an elegant appeal thanks subtly shiny dark denims.

PROUDLY RUSTIC

Eco-responsibility permeates every collection. Alluring new country-in-the-city styles team with a rustic simplicity, reflected in denims by the proliferation of blends combining natural fibers.

Linen/hemp cottons embrace and enhance their readily visible weaves. Color stories tend to a controlled neutrality: ecrus remain on the rise, as do earth tones, with khakis and yellowish browns evoking the natural origin of the fibers. Blues are either extremely raw with strikingly irregular weaves, or medium-toned and yellowed to create a vintage look.

Styles are clearly inspired by workwear, and are fully intended to be unisex. Deliberately oversized volumes invite a casual approach.

Jackets are straight, elongated and oversized, in a 90s vein. Patch pockets are exaggeratedly large with clearly visible stitching. Pants are genderless, with new deep-pocketed cargo pants or low-waisted baggies. High-waisted Mom jeans are trimmed with pleat details at the waist and generously rolled-up legs.

With their functional details and sturdy denim fabrics, overalls are a must-have for a modern back-to-the-farm look. Thick denim overshirts can easily be paired with a loosely cut denim dress or oversized cargo trouser, to finish off a head-to-toe jeans look.
