100% European hemp+cotton fabrics from KOMBINAT

Hemp fibre, long forgotten in the textile industry, is operating a comeback. With more and more people looking for natural solutions and local manufacturing, hemp is uniquely placed to fulfil these aspirations. Currently, however, most European-grown hemp fibre is leaving the continent for processing in far-away places. We decided to change it! In the world of global supply chain with difficult tracebility and dubious environmental practices, we’ve build a vertically integrated operation in Poland – we grow hemp ourselves, cottonise it mechanically, blend with EU-grown cotton, spin into yarn on our own equipment and weave into finished fabrics. With no chemical treatment involved in fibre processing, our artisanal production process results in sturdy, medium- to heavy-weight rigid fabrics that are perfect for casual workwear apparel and any other applications in the denim universe. |
Hemp fibre has lower environmental footprint then most alternative raw materials used in textile production. Processing, however, might have a huge effect on the true sustainability score of the resulting fabric. While it requires less water than cotton for cultivation and doesn’t need any pesticides during growth – shipping it all around the world to undergo intense chemical treatment might in the end mean that heavily processed hemp fibre is actually less sustainable than cotton. Conscious brands should therefore focus not only on what the label says, but first and foremost on the production process details and raw materials provenance. |
