AAMATI: The Biodegradable Luxury Leather Grown in India’s Mango Orchards

A patented, biodegradable, next-generation leather with no animal and no plastic arrives at Première Vision Paris this September, born in India’s mango orchards, destined for the world’s finest ateliers.

From agricultural waste to advanced material

India grows over twenty million tonnes of mangoes a season; a share never reaches a buyer. AAMATI Green turns agricultural waste into an advanced material through proprietary biopolymer reactor research. Surplus fruit becomes a leather of approximately fifty per cent mango biomass and fifty per cent proprietary biopolymer matrix on a natural cotton backing, finished with advanced bio-based coating systems. The biopolymer is derived from recovered cooking oils and agricultural by-products: AAMATI’s answer to fossil chemistries like PU and PVC. Patented in India and filed in Europe and the United States, the formulation is secured by exclusive ten-year manufacturing rights and IP. It is waste management with a human dividend: farmers across India’s mango belt are paid for fruit that once earned nothing.

Tested at CLRI, proven for luxury

It draws on years of research with the Advanced Materials team at CSIR-CLRI, India’s Central Leather Research Institute, led by Dr. P. Thanikaivelan. Independently tested across twelve ISO and SATRA parameters, including abrasion beyond 35,000 Martindale cycles, heatresistance to 80°C and cold-crack at −10°C, it is engineered to satisfy the performance expectations of luxury leather goods and the industry’s demand for biodegradable alternatives.

A palette for leather designers

For leather designers it is a palette: any colour, finishes from soft matte to croc-effect embossing, and a custom atelier library of more than 1,500 leather prints. It is already cut into handbags, footwear, watch straps and luggage.
