Solstiss sponsors Parsons School of Design an Haute Couture lace contest on the theme: HERITAGE
This year, Solstiss New York renewed its commitment to educate the future of New York fashion students, by sponsoring a lace competition at the prestigious Parsons School of Design. A highly anticipated collaboration with Solstiss continues to nurture in order to raise awareness of the historic know-how and unique craftsmanship of French Leavers lace. Not only is passing on the narrative of lace at the heart of this project, it is also the theme of this year’s 2023 edition: HERITAGE.
After a presentation on the history of French Leavers lace from the 15th century to present day, the group of first-year students chose their lace yardage from a selection of over 80 designs. They had 10 weeks to create a capsule collection incorporating Solstiss lace in an innovative, unexpected and thematically relevant way. Coming from all over the world, it was exciting to discover the unique style of each student, highly imbued with their own culture and identity. The richness of this diversity was perfectly reflected in their creations.
The final presentation took place at Parsons studios. Each student had five minutes to present their work and explain their creative process and inspirations. Each judge had a panel form to assess each student’s work based on 4 criterias: lace as main fabric, creativity, overall aesthetic and technicality. The prestigious jury for this year’s event included fashion personalities such as Julia Gilhart, Nicole Fischelis and designer Gilles Mendel, all of whom were very impressed by the maturity and seriousness of the students’ work, and their impressive styles. Through their professional perspective and expertise, the jury provided the students with invaluable advice: on the creative and technical dimension and also on marketing aspects. The three top winners were awarded with a diploma of ‘Certified Lace Expert’ and a lace donation of their choice, to be used at their discretion.
With this initiative, Solstiss wishes to continue to pass on knowledge of this exceptional heritage and develop the talents of tomorrow. A virtuous connection and relationship where school and company learn and grow with each other.
