Spring-Summer 27 Decodings: Leather
For Spring–Summer 2027, leather is asserting itself as a field of expression in which the material itself becomes a statement. Developments are focusing on high value-added products, with sensoriality and the visual impact of surfaces dialoguing with performance in use.
The intrinsic character of the hides - grain, hand feel, density, malleability, firmness or suppleness - is expressed with clarity and restraint. This season is promoting a sensitive reading of leather, whereby the material is seen but, above all, it is felt. At the same time, eco-responsibility is now permeating practices in a holistic way.
Three major trends are structuring this dynamic. First, an in-depth exploration of velvety and nubuck surfaces, placing tactility at the core, for both apparel and accessories. Then, a family of luminous and pearlescent fantasies, in which cosmetic-like effects are revealing the grain and elevating it. Finally, there is the rise of functional character enriched by craftsmanship, combining contemporary artisanal approaches, technical finishing processes and workwear influences, particularly visible in leather goods and footwear.
Sensory, velvety and creamy finishes
A muted, enveloping sensoriality is unfolding across leathers with a velvety touch and a powdery, talc-like matte appearance. Soft, fluid nubuck lambskins developed for apparel are favoring finesse, drape and a hand that comes close to that of textiles. Stretch suede leathers, with washed or bleached finishes, are introducing a dual feminine and sporty dimension. Some surfaces are evoking micro-terry or a slightly spongy aspect, reinforcing the tactile appeal and references to performance and sports materials.
For footwear and bags, this quest for softness is being transposed onto more structured hides. Calfskins with pronounced grain are softened through very fine sanding, resulting in balmy, creamy, nourished hand feels, sometimes enhanced by a subtle alveolar effect. Vegetable-tanned lambskins, with sanded and lightly crinkled surfaces, are conveying a muted naturality and an exceptionally soft appearance, particularly suited to supple leather goods.
Summer 27 is thus defining leathers in which the visual and tactile qualities are responding to one another, delivering a fully immersive sensory experience.

Pearlescent fantasies, living grains
The season’s glossy effects are avoiding both uniformity and opacity. Pearlescent, pearly or shell-inspired developments are acting like luminous veils, reminiscent of make-up powders with no heavy material effect.
Inspiration is drawing on mica, shimmering sand and wet mother-of-pearl. Suede splits are enhanced with subtle iridescent finishes. Scale-like embossings, halfway between crocodile and shell structures, are introducing “wet” or mother-of-pearl reflections. One constant remains: the grain remains visible. Fantasy never conceals the material, it highlights it. The surfaces are never fully smooth, allowing materiality to emerge under the light, creating a visual vibration that keeps leather within an organic, living register.

Functional craftsmanship and graphic impact
The third trend connects function, decoration and know-how. Tanners and manufacturers are exploring contemporary craftsmanship, in which the handmade interacts with high-precision industrial processes. The objective is clear: to create differentiation through material work and added value.
Leather braiding, cane effects and basket-weave inspirations are translating into both actual constructions and embossings that simulate these techniques. Trimming effects, geometric reliefs and stylized structures are generating statement pieces with strong graphic impact. This approach is found especially in leather goods and footwear, with structured totes and utilitarian volumes.
The color palette is supporting this shift. Alongside natural tones, unexpected shades are emerging, bold greens, vibrant reds and pop hues, moving leather away from its traditional register and anchoring it in a more daring visual modernity. Functionality is no longer neutral; it has become a carrier of identity.

Within this Spring–Summer 27 landscape then, leather is not seeking to fade behind form. It is asserting itself as a language in its own right, whereby touch, light and construction are becoming the new markers of value, bringing the creativity of tanners to the forefront and defining the desirable identity of leather.
