Valérie Colas des Francs, Art de Paille, au salon Maison d'Exceptions 1/2

(English subtitles available)

« My name is Valérie Colas des Francs, I work with straw marquetry. This craft originally was limited to the worlds of furniture and interior design; it’s a business that has existed since the 17th century.

I have been a furniture restorer for 15 years now. I opened my workshop last November in Nemours. I was lucky to be in the heart of the chateau. I also have business based on creation, working on commissioned projects and now, for the first time, presenting my own couture work in straw marquetry. I’m pretty confined to the world of Art Deco. I love the lines and colors of the decorative arts; my furniture is very inspired by this vocabulary.

Although, in everything I do I strive to create a bit of movement. What pleases me about straw is its materiality. It is very brilliant, it has a natural silica polish that is extremely luminous and changes color from one moment to the next. It is very moiré and very brilliant. Everything I create revolves around motion. Since light is perpetually moving, and so are we. »
