« I was called by Kyoto. We have traditional know-how but we do not know how to render it contemporary. I initially proposed collaborating with Europe because it is obvious that we must leave our country to be exposed to new ideas. It is true for Japan, as well as for France, Germany, etc.
Exceptionality is found in the way of transforming traditional things, making them useful for other things beyond their original intentions.
Know-how is our past, our ancestors, but it is also a process of transforming knowledge. It seems to me that this is the only way to preserve; this was confirmed by my experience in Kyoto.
And I see here certain Japanese weavers who make beautiful but very expensive things; how can we make these less expensive and more widely useable? »
