Janaïna Milheiro, au salon Maison d'Exceptions

(English subtitles available)

« I am Janaïna Milheiro, designer and artisan. I specialize in feather work and textiles. This is the third time I’ve participated in Maison d’Exceptions and this year my new collection is composed of feather flocking and marquetry, as shown in the piece I have here.

Each module, each design seen here corresponds to a portion of feathers that were first glued and then recut according to the given design, before being reapplied to textile to produce a precise composition. The idea was to use only the flexible, light, translucent portions of feathers. As feathers are composed of a relatively rigid, structural stem and more flexible, soft whiskers.

Compared to traditional work with feathers, where the entire feather is customarily used, I only use this part. It is through this gluing techniques that I can work in this manner. The feathers are first glued and then cut into the various forms that I want to work with, finally being recombined on fabric. They are sort of like little stickers or modules that one can assemble at will. What is interesting is that by freeing the feather from its shaft, a supple and lightweight handfeel is preserved. »
