Knits, don’t turn down the volume

Mechanical knitting machines are increasingly skilled in working texture and volume. The news this year at machine manufacturer Shima Seiki (6KW149), a specialist in fl atbed knits: a knit with a tweed effect, where the yarn is passed through the structure of the knit. Honeycombs, veloureffects, plush-like growths, creponned – beyond the fi bre mixes, textures are amplify ed thanks to this innovative technology. Various 3D simulators are integrated into the knitting software, and in direct contact with the machines, to make it easier to lend volume to the garment. There’s no longer a barrier between the design and the fi nished product. At the other end of the manufacturing spectrum, Clouds (6KW124) works noble fi bres like silk or cashmere in its hand knits, and over-embroiders its cashmere yarn knits for a cloudy effect. Julia Pines (5U21), a knitting wizard, is presenting at Indigo some prototypes of thick shirred knits, whose textures are thickly powdered by a chiffon over-embroidered on the surface. Inspiring!
